Presents Situation of Sri Lanka and Precautions of HRM to protect the Organization

As a country, Sri Lanka is going through with critical time periods. People are struggling to continue life routine in minimal level, but it is very challenging to them. Organizations also struggling to maintain cash flow to protect the business. HRM has to play major role here to manage both employees as well as the Organization. People are the main asset of the Organization. Then without people, organization cannot be existed.

HRM Evolution

Figure 1 HRM Evolution

Over the period of time, it is important to understand the evolution of Human Resource Management to get know about their functions, practices and philosophy of the HRM that are being used in different circumstances. A development pattern of management is followed by Human Resource Management due to the similar types of problems existed in both the fields. (Thakur, 2021)

Nowadays, employees are running with tremendous pressure to manage their day-to-day requirement. Household item prices are increasing drastically. In this situation, people are having considerable doubt regarding how manage with monthly income. Employee personal life situation is directly impacted to work life as well. Output is generated with low efficiency where matters to Organization. People replacement is not an answer for this because reason is country situation. Therefore, needs to focus with technical manner.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Figure 2 Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

There are at least five sets of goals, which we may call basic needs. These are briefly physiological, safety, love, 'esteem, and self-actualization. In addition, we are motivated by the desire to achieve or maintain the various conditions upon which these basic satisfactions rest and by certain more intellectual desires.” (Maslow, 1943)

As per above Figure 2, Basic Needs are very important and essentials. If there any lack of basic needs, that would be directly impacting to people life pattern. This is where Sri Lankan’s are struggling right now. Easiest way to fulfil above requirement is increase the salary. But that will lead to bleed the money of organization and end up with bankrupt.

What role has to play by HRM

Even Organization HRM won’t be able to solve all the problems of employees. But it is more important to understand their problems. Information is needed to gather in professional way and confidentially. Any leakage will lead to crash person personality. Below mention some suggestions to gather information.

·         Develop a platform to gather details

Most of the employees are using smartphone. Develop an app to gather details from employee. It is a good method because employees are able to protect their privacy. Privacy is very important otherwise employees will not reveal their truth. Benefits of the online app is, easy access, able to update new concerns then and there, privacy, able to communicate employee via app, etc.,

·         Develop online form (E.g., Google Forms)

Smartphone facility is required for this as well. Privacy level would be high. But unable to contact employee through this.

·         Design a paper form

Very ordinary method. Processing has to do by HRM team manually. Detail processing is needed to handle by HRM. Privacy is not that much secure.

·         One on one discussion

Face to face discussion with employee and HRM person. Challenge is, some employees are reluctant to reveal their personal concerns to external. Privacy is purely depended on the people who are conducting discussion.

Example, If the employee was stuck due to high loan amount and many installments were in arrears. This situation is very common is nowadays. Employees do not have much knowledge about legal side and how to handle this kind of situation. Then organization is able to provide consultation facility to discuss this kind of issue with lawyer free of charge. Organization is able to bear consultation fee because it is like an investment. Then employee can follow the direction and able to balance personal life as well.

After gather details, needs to do analysis of problems. HRM or Organization won’t be able to provide answers for all the problems. Some of them may needs technical advice which able to provide from Organization.

In this situation, employee motivation is the main factor. If the organization gives high motivation to employee, they will do their best to meet regular efficiency. If employee is feeling that Organization is with them for any situation and paying special attention to them, that is giving strength to them. That strength gives power to overcome the obstacles. Then employees are putting their trust with Organization. This is where HRM is needed to focus protect employees as well as the Organization.

  10. Hi Anushka,
The way you have written and mentioned the figures in your text is super helpful in understanding what you are trying to say. I think when collecting data from the employees, their anonymity is crucial so they will open up to the HR Manager. It would be great if you could suggest some other practices HR can adapt to tackle the current situation in SL. Ex: Programs to increase skills, programs targeting their mental well-being etc.

  23. As you have mentioned here gathering anonymous employee feedbacks are very important as some of the staff might not reveal them. Although most of the leading organizations are using third party stakeholders such as Towers Watson to have a confidentiality for their annual performance reviews, there might be some more organizations that use traditional ways & those should be changed in order to get proper staff feedbacks.

    1. When the Organization is running in hard time, that wouldn't be necessary to outsource gather information. That is an another cost. Then Organization must focus and trust on their HRM department to carry out these kind of project to protect the organization.
